That's what they use for tambour work, because they need to pierece through fabric. Not at all like like the ones we use for crocheting.

Yes, actually, the two tools are pretty much interchangeable. And many early crochet hooks are built like tambour hooks, with a wood handle with the metal bit stuck in the end.
