Was it you asking about braces? I found information accidentally while looking for something else. Earliest form of braces appears to be 1780's for gentlemen's breeches, usually just ribbon. I can quote exactly if you wish - book and computer are a whole floor apart and I am too lazy to go up and get the book! (It's a guide to where costume items can be found in the U.K. - "A Guide to Historic Costume?"
