I adore music from the Renaissance and Baroqe periods, though, and Mozart
(does he count as Baroqe or Romantic?

He's "Classical"....with Haydn and Beethoven.

And there are lots of Baroque and Classical operas. My faves too. I like the
stylized, non-realistic approach of these operas. "Le Nozzi di Figaro" is my
fave.
But I also like a lot of 19th century fare. Who doesn't like Rossini? Verdi
is awfully good...well can be. Of course one can do a dreadful production of
a great opera, y'know.

And I must admit that "Die Valkure" is a lot of "fun" in that melodramatic
way. But you really have to prepare for Wagner.

It must be remembered that when people say "I don't like opera", it's like
saying "I don't like cheese". There's a million different kinds!!!!! Four
centuries worth. "L'Orfeo" is nothing like "Wozzek"! Both are great in their
own
way.

And.... was it Suzi who didn't like Ballet? But you loved Rameau? About 1/3
of his operas ARE ballet!

I love ballet but I admit I go for those Balenchine no costume/ no sets
pieces to great music. "La Sylphide" is a big bore!.... with mediocre music.
However "Giselle" is divine [especially Act II]....with mediocre music.
But Delibes &Tchaikovsky changed all that mediocre music "tradition".

One of the best works of art EVER created is Balenchine's "The Four
Temperaments". The music was written in 1940 by Hindemith and is really
good....a
theme with 4 variations [one for each temperament] for strings and a
piano....like a concerto. The choreography is perfection. No sets....no
costumes. It's
on DVD but the music is out of sync by like 1/2 a second and I can't stand it!
I know it's wrong because I have it on VHS and have watched it a million
times.
