corset.

I've always wondered about this. I mean they certainly wore corsets for the
1st production. But many 18th century theatres are smaller than the current
Met of Paris opera houses and period instruments are often quieter as well.
But
you know the original Brunhilde wore a corset! Yikes!

I suspect they didn't go for tight lacing...which is what we do nowadays
with boned bodices and corsets for opera. Snug but not tight.

Remember that scene in "Topsy Turvey"?

"I simply cannot appear on stage without a corset!"
And the Scottish tenor even wears a corset.

I've had singer say they like a corset [if it's not too tight] because it
gives them great posture and they can just belt it out standing up straight.
