It's a fancy clamp-thingy, that functions almost as a third hand, to help
you with some sorts of handsewing tasks, when a third hand would be really
handy (no pun intended, truly...just feeling the lack of a good vocabulary
tonight).
I don't own one, but I've seen them in the occasional catalogue over the
years.  I *think* they're Victorian in origin.
