What is a sewing bird?

They're also known as sewing clamps or "third hands". They go back at least as far as the 18th c. in the west and also turn up in traditional Japanese sewing.

Sailors, or at least the sail-repairers on sailing ships, used a hook to hold the work taut. These have a length of twine at the non-hook end, so they can be tied to something.
