There is a jerkin in the Met Museum that laces in the back. I don't know if
there is a photo of the back of it, but you can clearly see that it does in
the pattern (first ed. Blanche Payne's History of Costume.)

I have not seen it mentioned whether it is for a man or woman, it fit me
with but a few tweaks, but I don't know if that proves anything;)
