And you're probably right about warmth being a matter of perspective (I grew up in South Texas, about a day's drive from the tropics), but I also know it was supposed to be colder back then. Drawers arrived in England during Elizabeth's reign but were considered novelties and "foreign." They weren't adopted as regular wear until later.
