Well, actually they did wear their gowns like that though I don't believe it was appropriate for riding. Elizabeth did go to her coronation with her hair down. She said that she was a virgin queen and wanted the world to know it. Her coronation portraits show her crown on her long (frizzy) red hair which sticks out and is hanging over the coronation cloak.
