And in Virginia and even sometime in the Carolinas I have heard it referred to 
as "The Late Unpleasantness" even though it got NASTY in the Carolinas.  Read 
Cold mountain, although a novel, much of that was taken from true occurances.
   
  And don't fall into the trap of " they were so poor...Undersupplied...  
whatever".  I've heard a story that the state of Georgia ended the was with so 
much surplus uniforms, they were still giving it out to German Prisoners of war 
in the 1940s as well as clothing the prisoners in the state pen.  True?  But I 
hope I'm not repeating urban ledgends
   
  But again, it all depends.  For just a costume, anything can go.  There are a 
lot of pictures on line and reenactor units that post their reqirements for 
uniforms.  A few minutes surfing reenactors or units-Civil War-American might 
give you a good idea of how to go.  Some of the more authentic, who know way 
more than I do turn out some georgeous uniforms, and units look uniform, 
athough not all exactly alike.
