Speaking as a long-term, albeit fairly relaxed, SCA member, that sort of
outfit also occurs in the 16th. (dang, but this is hard to type with a
pyrring cat in one's arms!)
At any rate, there are less-poofy doublets and such in Janet Arnold. The
one dealing with clothing from 1560-1620. Something more merchant/middle
class might be more appealing than something upper-class, also.
I must admit, though, that my first thought was also something more
eastern-European (Hungarian, Polish, etc.). Or maybe something Middle
Eastern? Or even Mongolian? Or Norse? All those cultures, within the SCA
time period, used pants....

Try to find "Vecellio's Renaissance Costume Book" - Dover. It has 16th century drawings of Polish, Russian, Huyngarian, Turkish etc. etc. A lot looks like the sort of thing being suggested, but he could have a wide range of pictures to choose from.
