So is every written communication, back to the days of clay tablets. Email is not new in that respect. It's just a letter.

People's expertise can, and should, be judged on what they say about any given subject at that given time. Not on whether they explicitly say "I am an expert" or "I am not an expert." Whether the person thinks they are an expert or not is irrelevant, as is whether their friends think so.
And of course, in a public group other people are likely to respond to whatever you have said. You don't need to explicitly give them the right to do so. You also don't need to "accept" everything everyone else says in the sense of agreeing with it.

I'm not talking about the atmosphere I grew up in, or the people I know "in the flesh" either socially or professionally. For both of which which I am deeply thankful. I'm talking about what I see on the net every day in some e-groups, a social dynamic I've never seen before, at least not at nearly that level. H-costume is much better than most.
