I know you answered this yourself, but it probably comes from the term vasquina which was used to describe a petticoat/skirt as you have described. In Alcega it is used *only* for skirts, if there is a bodice it is mentioned seperately: Vasquina y cuerpo baxo. I haven't quite worked out what makes a vasquina is different from a faldellin, but it seems a vasquina is made from trapezoid pieces while the faldellin are from half circles.
