Yes, the Fashion in Detail digrams in the 17th-18th volume and 19th
volume, detail that a lot of piecing was necessary whether a new garment
or one remodled or made from an older one. Fabric was very expensive and
labor was cheap which is the opposite of today. Every little bit of
fabric possible was used when needed and fashions, of course, changed
much more slowly than today.

I find often that the given yardage in today's patterns is often very
generous and I can often cut a garment for a doll or the rare times when
I sew for myself(where the fabric will work for a doll too)with enough
yardage to spare for said doll. If you are 5'4" or less, you often need
less yardage, a rare benefit for us shorties out there!
