I DID refuse to see "Titanic"--couldn't take what I had heard on the liberties with the story (a friend of mine who went to see it with her teenaged daughter found the leads so obnoxious that she was rooting for the North Atlantic). I think "A Night to Remember" tried to get the story right, but I haven't seen it in years, so I might hate it now.
I went to "Titanic" to see all the CGI they did with the ship. For all of the cheezy storylines, the research they did into the actual sinking was quite well done. The ship broke where it was supposed to break and did more or less what the current research was saying it did. I was just eating up all of the scenery--the dining rooms, the staircases, the staterooms, even the 3rd class areas. And the reciprocating engine shots in IMAX were worth the price of admission themselves. (And no, Leo isn't scenery. I'm much more of a Ralph Fiennes type.)

"A Night to Remember" was quite well done, especially for the time. It was quite closely based on Walter Lord's book.
