how about a plain SILVER chain? Gold is the only *reserved* unadorned chain 'colour'

I have never seen a silver chain in a painting of the period our clothes come from, the late 1580's, whereas I have seen plain gold chains. Also, my husband's jerkin, if I ever get round to making it, is black and gold brocade, so I wouldn't naturally think of putting silver on that.

I have asked my hostess to let me know the rules that govern clothing for this particular group, so I don't cause any more waves.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

If you are getting a jeweled or decorated chain, there's no problem but wearing a plain gold chain (after having been warned against it) would be a major faux pas.

That is a real pity, as if my husband were to wear a jewelled or decorated chain in England it would be considered to be pretentious and inaccurate, as it is not seen in portraits as far as I can remember. He will probably have to go without altogether in that case, as I don't want to spend money on something he can't wear here.
