Early on, he made a point about being very mysterious, which fed the hype
and spawned the collateral books about decoding the secrets, or debunking
the story.

More of a problem, I think, are that at various points in the book, he
presents certain things overtly as facts, upon which the story is built.
Alas, many of those "facts" are just as fictitious as the rest of it. A
French friend of mine was livid that he couldn't even get the geography
right -- e.g. traveling north (or east or whatever he said) as described
in the book would not take you to Versailles, etc.
