mmm...to me, "should not" implies a directive ("Thou shalt not"), and "could
not" implies completely impossible (not undesirable or unlikely, but
flat-out impossible).
Furthermore, just because More shows up in a portrait with a "s" collar, and
just because he was Chancellor of England, does not, in fact, mean that the
one necessarily is linked with the other (no pun intended). The two things
(chancellorship and an "s" collar) have More in common, but one did not
necessarily *cause* the other. Proof I'd consider, oh, actual laws or
written documents, or a survey of similar portraits in which all holders of
high offices and *only* holders of high offices had such a collar, say, like
the members of the Order of the Garter or something. Then, you might have a
case. Of course, even then that might not prove causality...it may be that
it takes a fairly substantially wealthy person to be able to own such a
collar, and such men also tend to hold positions of power and
responsibility.
