I began like a lot of folks here, by sewing for my Barbie. I grew up in a very rural area and my only neighbors within walking distance was a family with 18 kids - 10 of which were girls. None of us had money, but people from town always gave their family clothes. So, some of the ones they didn't use we cut up for Barbie clothes. We had real fur, satin, silk, velvet, etc. Mom showed me the basics of stitching and I was off! I was about nine. She taught me to use her sewing machine when I was about 10. I got my own at 17, when I got married. Since then, I have made school play costumes, my brother-in-laws "Mountain Man" costume, two of my daughter's wedding gowns (one was Medieval), tons of street clothes, alterations, quilts, blah, blah, blah. I must say of all the crafts I have learned in my life, sewing has given me the most pleasure, been the most thrifty and proved to be the most useful of all.
