I work occasional shifts at Fashion Fabrics Outlet, the best local place for reasonably-priced wool, linen, and silk. So of course we get a lot of re-enactors, theatre costumers, living history interpreters, etc. doing all periods. Given my own background, I find it's pretty easy to spot the historic costumers, particularly if they come in pairs or groups. (It's a small store, so it's easy to overhear conversations as they shop.) In these cases, my usual question at the cutting counter is "So, what period are you doing?" That gets us right past the moment where they wonder how (or whether) to explain to the employee it's for a costume. I do get some pretty funny double-takes from people who haven't been to our shop before, since clearly they're used to fabric stores with employees who know nothing about this subject. --Robin _______________________________________________ h-costume mailing list [email protected] http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
