And I have 
found that the people who are most friendly and forthcoming when I ask 
"What are you making?"  are not the historical costumers.  They usually 
just shut up, like I am probably beneath them and haven't a clue what 
they are doing.  

Actually, it's that they don't know how to translate words like "houplande" 
into everyday language or are tired of educating people who think this means 
the local ren faire.  Also, it is an embarrassing question to the fabric junkie 
who has no idea what she'll make out of it, but just knows it's beautiful and 
on sale for 50% off.
