Fabric must ripen and mellow, of course - we shall sew no fabric
before its time!

I have told fabric store employees that I'm buying it simply because
I like it, on numerous occasions. I might say the color was so
pretty I could not resist, or that it's hard to find this particular
weight of whatever these days.

Maybe I heard it on this list, or maybe directly in a fabric store -
the reason they ask (or are supposed to ask as part of the job) is to
advise on notions and perhaps coordinating fabrics. It also breaks
the ice in case the customer has a question, wants to hand over the
pattern envelope so the yardage can be verified, etc. For the
store's benefit, they can sell more to each customer, and for the
customer's benefit, perhaps head off a horrible mistake.

But it's true, the amount of help will vary with the salesperson's
own expertise. I've never run into the "ask and ignore"
technique, but then I would just smile and keep a close eye on their
measuring!
