It's a real color. For a washer load, I've just thrown in the whole box of ecru. For tan or a grey, just like 1/4 to 1/2 a box. And it does change the color. It is no longer white, but definitely up close looks off-white. But from the audience or on camera, if it's nice and even, it will actually look white, not off white. A true white almost glows on camera. If fact I've used that effect for a ghost. In a film where a girl who was murdered coming home from the prom keeps haunting the dreams of the protagonist. The ghost I put in white white satin with a white white tulle over it. IN dailies she glowed unnaturally white against the dark pine forest of a background. Of course the cinematographer may have tweaked things to help. The film BTW, never came out. It never had more than a working title.
