For a washer load, I've just thrown in the whole box of ecru. For tan or a  
grey, just like 1/4 to 1/2 a box. 
And it does change the color. It is no longer white, but definitely up  close 
looks off-white. But from the audience or on camera, if it's nice and  even, 
it will actually look white, not off white. A true white almost glows on  
camera. If fact I've used that effect for a ghost. In a film where a girl who  
was 
murdered coming home from the prom keeps haunting the dreams of the  
protagonist. The ghost I put in white white satin with a white white tulle over 
 it. 
IN dailies she glowed unnaturally white against the dark pine forest of a  
background. Of course the cinematographer may have tweaked things to help.
 
The film BTW, never came out. It never had more than a working title.
