Kate Greenaway illustrations of children were popular from the early 1880's-1900.
It has been some 40 years since I read "Heidi" at age 9 or 10 and I don't recall either the original publication date or if Johanna Spiyi(sp/)the author set it in the years she was writing it or in a more distant era. Check the copyright page of the book; it may give the original copyright and/or publication date.
