I'm not familiar with the Mirren film, but you're right about the Blanchett 
movie; for every costume that wasn't too bad, there were a ton of gowns that 
looked like bad Ren Faire escapees.  I got particularly annoyed because the 
Robert Dudley character went around with his doublet open and his shirt 
collar untied!  No sane man would have gone about in public dressed like that 
in period.  (When Hamlet visits Ophelia in a similar state of deshabille, she 
immediately assumes he's run mad.)

I have heard so much about how bad those costumes are I've actually become 
interesting in seeing it--if only to justify my curiosity.

Beats me why they seemed to think she was a Pict.  :-)

Missed that little item.  One thing I hated about that movie was how drab all 
the costumes were.  The other thing is the way they kept mixing the 
potentially historical with the patently legendary.
