Hi, Lorine,
It's not that I don't know anything about Lulu.com, or the other POD
publishers. Or that I would never publish POD. I might consider it IF
the print quality and price were equal to that of offset (requiring the
invention and adoption of new equipment, which some of the manufacturers
are striving to improve), and if the PO marketing image in the industry
was better.
It's very seductive to new publishers to believe that they can publish a
book without researching the industry and without learning new skills,
print any number of high-quality copies for hardly any money, pay
nothing for warehousing, market with no work, and make tons of money in
the process. If all the glowing promises some POD sites and
book-marketing gurus make were true, EVERYONE, from the megapublishers
on down, would POD publish and sell only on Amazon.com and
BarnesandNoble.com.
As things are, the industry as a whole considers these unsuccessful
and/or hobbyist strategies, and with some reason.
Yes, some POD books do make it in the market. Maybe your book will be
one of them. I'm not going to play dueling authorities with your
marketing guru. It's your money and your project.
Best,
Fran
