Because of the early-ish year of the painting....
 
could this be gowns like in Janet Arnold's "Patterns of Fashion,  
Vol.1"...the 1st 18th century gown in there, on page 22? Arnold calls it a  
"wrapping 
gown" but I don't think she means a wrapper!...an at home sorta  dressing gown. 
It looks perfectly fine or wearing out and about. It's a  logical  procession 
from the "robe volante" [one is pictured in the  big Kyoto book].
