Once -- probably in the late 70s but maybe the early 80s -- I saw a picture of a really over-the-top outrageous gown. My memory, all these years, has been that it was Cher wearing something by Mackie on the cover of Time.
I had occasion to try to hunt up that image, and I find out that although there was a 1975 Time cover with Cher in an outrageous Mackie dress, it wasn't the one I'm thinking of. And (thanks to Time's cover-search function), it doesn't seem to be any other Time cover either. OK, I figured it must have been Cher on the cover of something else we had around the house in those years -- perhaps Parade magazine or the local TV listings magazine. However, a thorough search through Google, eBay, and a variety of Cher fan sites hasn't turned it up either. So it's quite possible that in addition to not being Time, it may not have been Cher or Mackie either. What I am certain about is the dress, so I post here in case someone else recognizes it by description. For lack of a better term, I'd have to call it a variation on a halter design. The midriff and torso were mostly bare except for a extension of fabric coming up from the skirt, over one breast, around the back of the neck, and down to reach the other breast, which it cupped in a pocket at the end of the extension. I remember spending a long time trying to work out the engineering and wondering if anyone could actually move in such a thing without ruining the tension that kept the extension in place. I expect spirit gum was involved, although it's possible there was a flesh-toned body stocking creating the illusion of the wrapped strip of fabric staying in place (which is how I'd make it for stage if I had to). I don't remember anything about the skirt, so perhaps it was pants (and thus a jumpsuit, not a dress). Color *might* have been white or gold. You can see why I thought this had to be (1) Cher and (2) Mackie. If not, who was it, and where can I locate that image? Not really urgent, just it's been bothering me. --Robin _______________________________________________ h-costume mailing list [email protected] http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
