Another fabric wich isnt that difficult to work with would be Moiré Antique, its usually made of polyester these days, comes in many yummy shades. In one of my catalogues there is a darkblue robe francaise in watered silk, very nice and it would also have the right thickness and stiffnes for this kind of robe. But actually the cotton version i suggested you, looks very nice also. Its an italian robe, used for summer wear.

Check out bridal fabrics.

They aren't all white and ivory these days, and some of the patterns are
surprizingly historical (in look anyway).

Plus, bridal no longer means just expensive silk  :o)
