So was elastic used for women's stocking garters in the 1800s? If not, how did they keep them up before garters were attached to corsets?

Does anyone know when elastic was first used in clothing and how?

I believe Thomas Hancock developed elastic for gloves in the early 1800s and did a separate patent for the machine to make the elastic in the 1830s.  I found this link: http://www.bouncing-balls.com/index2.htm
