There is a sewing show on Public TV in the US, that has a sponsor who's quote is "When patterns fit, people sew."

FITTING, by far, is the biggest obstacle to my own sewing. I can read about the styles and silhouettes of a Period but can I make my own attempts at construction, FIT ? No. I always need another, knowledgeable person, to help with fitting. Even the dress form, with adjustment wheels and "added padding" is not adequate for me to get adequate fit. I need a "tailor"!

Very frustrating.

I work at Joanns part time and the sewing I have noticed most going on is making purses. I don't know if that will lead to anything else. What I'm afraid of is that girls who have never sewn before or sewn very little will be wanting to make themselves something to wear, and without any instructions, will try to whip something up and find it won't fit or they get frustrated by not understanding the directions and they quit. I started sewing at 13 and made an awful lot of stuff before I even began to figure out how to make it fit. Good thing is I didn't quit, so hopefully they will stick with it. One of the biggest problems they may encounter is the sizing of patterns. I try to ask them if they know about pattern sizing at the cut table, if I can do so without implying that they don't know what they're doing.

I would have said a year or so ago that the reason fabric stores in general were hurting is that so few people are sewing anymore. However, I understand that the popularity of "Project Runway" is leading to a surge in interest among young people. Maybe, if the stores can just hold on a little longer. . .
