I can't comment on the use of knitted garters (we're told that the garter stitch
is called that because it was used for garters--can anybody verify this?) but
for 16th century I've used wide strips of bias-cut fabric, tied in a bow.  The
bias cut stretches enough the the garters were quite comfortable, and the big
bows...felt right.  I hasten to add that this wasn't planned; I thought my socks
would stay up better than they proved to, when they didn't I had to improvise.  

cheap, easy, and it works.  I can't provide documentation, but it seems at least
as plausible as knitted acrylic garters.
