Oh bother! Can't remember the exact name of the stuff right now. It was a fine gauzy stuff that was either pinned or possibly sewn on as an oversleeve (I'm guessing pinned was more likely). One theory is that it may have been put on to protect the handwork on the sleeves, but it's just a theory....
