I have been using all sorts of these novelty yarns for 18th C trim...and I think to very good effect. This was after drooling over the stomachers in the Kyoto book. and other illustrations of fancy wear.

How about using eyelash or pigtail yarn as a substitute? There are a number of fringed and textured novelty yarns similar to fly fringe, and much cheaper.
