And then there was the production of "Auntie Mame".

For once, I was just in the cast; someone else was doing costumes. That is, she said she would costume "Mame". I got her permission to costume myself; at the dress rehersal I showed up with 5 ordinary vintage costumes. The rest of the cast was pointed to a huge piloe of clothing thrown on to the floor, and told to find something that would fit...She was still too busy getting Mame's 10 costumes finished. After the rehearsal, the producer and director took me aside and asked if there was any way I could help...at least with the rest of the principals. Knowing I couldn't wear my stuff unless the others looked at least a good as I, I went home to scrounge and adapt about 20 pieces before the next night. T'was ever thus. (I did gain a reputation for shaking my magic wand...but it wasn't always fun!)

I'm willing to give "historical fantasy" more leeway than something that claims accuracy. I'm willing to give designers a lot of credit if they can use and successfully hide modern techniques because they're practical. A performance venue, whether it's stage, screen or something interactive like historical faire, is a performance venue.

There's still a point at which I can't suspend disbelief anymore. I think the worst case is when there's obviously been a lot of work put into accuracy, and one or two costumes (the stars', usually) just don't match.
