I use them at room temp. My info says that using heat is not advised. I dissolve the salt in hot water and let it come to room temp before adding dye and soda ash. I also dissolve the soda ash in hot water and let cool.
These are the directions for dyeing cotton. If you use soda ash on wool or silk, you will get holes or severely weakened fabric.
