FYI....
I don't know how to do it on a Mac, but if you have Windows:
Go to START
Then to "All Programs"
then to "Accessories"
then to "System Tools"
Find the "Character Map" and go to it.

or even easier, open a word document click on the insert menu, click on
symbol and select the accented letter you want click on insert and then copy
that character into your email.
