Well, the real Elizabeth I was about 54 during the time this film was set, and whether Cate Blanchette wanted to or not, I bet the studio big wigs nixed the idea to make her look that age. "Just make her look like she's had bad plastic surgery and think "Bram Stoker's Dracula" when designing the costumes and wigs, okay, cause that was just the coolest movie when I was twelve" I can imagine studio exec in charge of marketing saying.
Like I said, I can appreciate what the studio was driving at. But the real Elizabeth didn't show up at Tilbury in white and silver and long hair flowing. Neat visual, though, for this film. Want reasonably historical costumes and history--see Elizabeth R with Glenda Jackson.
