If you to go Berkeley, you might want to go to University Avenue, where,
stretched out over some blocks, is an Indian sari shop district. There
are a number of shops varying in quality and pricing. Also, just off
University is IMO the best Indian restaurant in the Bay Area. And one of
the few that hasn't copied the standard Gaylord's menu, or the standard
local lunchtime buffet. It's a hole in the wall called Bombay Cuisine,
and the food is fantastic.
If you go to Oakland, my favorite dim sum restaurant in the Bay Area is
there. It's called the Jade Villa. But there are lots, and lots, and
lots of Chinese restaurants all over the Bay Area--greasy chopstick,
moderate family, upscale/gourmet (the best of those is Ming's in the
South Bay, IMO), fusion cuisine, everything. If you want a four-star
gourmet vegetarian dinner, there's Green's in San Francisco. Pricey, but
a real dining experience. Cafe Chez Panissse in Berkeley is really
classy, and somewhat cheaper and less traditional-French than Chez
Panisse downstairs from it. Also pricey though. Bucci's in Emeryville
(the East Bay) is my favorite local Italian restaurant. There are also
plenty of fancy little pastry-and-espresso-drink places. Forget
Starbucks, there are many far better independent places.
Basically, the Bay Area has thousands of restaurants of all kinds. You
can find pretty much any cuisine here.
