I'm going to be on the west coast (U.S.) next week and am determined to
visit at least one fabric store! So, in San Francisco or in the LA area,
if you could visit one fabric store where you could be assured of a
fantastic bargain on silk, where would it be?
For silk, I'm thinking taffetas, embroidered, etc., things generally
suited to 18th/early 19th century wear.
'Lo Hope,
I'm a SF/SJ local & I'd recommend Thai Silks for plain taffetas, china
silks & Chinese brocades in a rainbow of colors (but you could order
the same thing from them online).
For sheer wacky variety, I'd have a wander thru the Scary Fabric Store
aka Fabric Mart (corner of Lundy & Berryessa in N San Jose). It's
piled very high & close together, but there will be things you cannot
find anywhere else. I think they buy dead stock, overruns and stock
from warehouse/retail store closings.

Britex in SF is where you going for the expensive (silk on silk
velvet, unusual (velvet ribbon) or designer items. Big yawn for us
historical types. You wont find historical looking embroidereds.
If you gotta stay in SF and dont want the high end designer things,
try Discount Fabrics in the Haight http://www.discountfabrics-sf.com/
or maybe one of the places the drag queens shop.
