Use watered down latex paint. It looks like dirt, but the material isn't damaged. If you want "wear" on seams or hems, try sand paper (hold wrapped over a block of wood).For a spot where the fabric is worn, try gingerly holding fabric (with something hard inside, like a dowel) against a grinder. Work slowly. Dipping hems in watered down paint looks like mud stains. You can drip wax on the material and then iron it out. It usually leaves a darker mark.
