You can use a cheese grater, and for dried mud, see if you can get
some Fuller's Earth - they still used to sell it in Boots not so long
ago. (It makes a great face pack too!) You just add water and it
becomes mud. It can be used for dry cleaning too, but thrown onto a
costume and allowed to dry, makes real mud.
