I am preparing to begin on my version of the gown shown in the Pelican portrait of Queen Elizabeth I, Nicholas Hilliard, circa 1574. The final gown is intended to be for formal occasions, with all the bells and whistles, so to speak.
I have been contemplating whether to make this a trained gown or not, and if I do, should the underskirt also be trained to help with the flow of the over skirt? The outer gown will be made with a fairly lightweight red-black shot silk and lined with a black silk satin that isn't very heavy either - with black velvet guards. The under skirt is probably going to be a fairly stiff silk with machine embroidered flowers on it - unless I change my mind again! One of my problems on this decision is that much of my research was done several years ago, and I have spent the time collecting the "right" fabrics and working on other projects so that now that I'm ready to start this one, I am having to recheck everything. I have this thought floating in my head that perhaps the train could be a separate layer that goes over the skirt - they is a separate skirt - but I'm not sure where that is coming from... alex -- I can handle anything that life throws at me.
