I used the Medieval Misc pattern about 20 *cough* years ago and had no trouble with it. However, I can't compare it to other patterns. It was cut on the bias and I thought, at the time, it worked well.
I'd suggest picking one and making a test in a cheap, but similar fabric to the one you plan to use. Then you can make adjustments and do a little fitting before cutting your good fabric.
The man I'm doing it for is slim, about 20 years old, if that'll help you:-)
