"Lumpy bumpy" is a 20th century phenomena that only happens when quilts get put into a washing machine. In the 1800's a quilt would have been hung and beaten, spot cleaned when necessary, and rarely completely emerged in water. Water makes the quilt quite heavy -- one person would have trouble lifting it -- and weakens the cotton fibers making them shred. Normally the filling would have remained quite flat within the quilt.
