On the subject of needles, my biggest problem is that I seem to have them break a lot. For some of them, I chalk this up to their being 'vintage' steel. About 5 years ago, I managed to get one of these in my foot; it broke off eye- forward which was lodged in my right big toe...and not visable. After x-ray, in laproscoptic surgery the steel broke millimeter by mill until it was all out. Stitches came out as planned, and then 36 hrs later I was admitted to the hospital ...where they kept me for 8 days. It was over seven months before I could wear a proper shoe! That needle was of WW2 vintage. I have stopped picking up odds and ends of old sewing boxes except for samples in my vintage/ antique sewing tools.

I have tried some of the name brands that have been mentioned in this conversation and some of these also seem to break more often than usual expectation. I have been blameing it on the quality of steel being used. This is certainly true if one buys look-alikes. Smaller needles both in length and guage do seem a little more reliable for my present projects.

I corrode nickel-plated needles as well - sharps, betweens, or tapestry needles. I buy gold plated needles whenever I find them. I got a bunch of them last Christmas in a set from Jo-Ann's. There was a pair of stork scissors, a tape measure, a gold plated thimble, and gold plated needles. I've got enough to last me for several years. :-)

My gold-plated needles are still yellow, and the
platinum-plating is still white.

They'll still be subject to ordinary friction and
wear, so if you wear out regular needles, you'll also
wear out the fancy plated needles.
