It could be a 'waistcoat' , sometimes called a 'shirt' in inventories, meaning a layer for warmth. Usually you find them as flannen, flannel, rarely lined silk, or sometimes linsey-woolsey, other materials are possible, I'm just not at my resources. 2cents reading out of context. Mari
