I, also, have a Black and Decker. It's the Classic model - no auto shut-off
and just a regular, old-fashioned dial setting. Cost about $30. It, too, is
heavy, but I like that. It's almost the same as the GE I had in college in
1970's.

My criteria in an iron is how close to the point the steam vents are. Some
of them have all the vents in the wide part which does absolutely no good
trying to press a seam open!

Has anyone ever used the tiny iron you see in the Quilt shows? Would it be
useful for getting into close seams?

I recently had to replace my iron and got a Black and Decker Digital
Advantage D2020. I'm not sure I'd recommend this to anyone. I had very
little choice when purchasing this one, as I was in the middle of a
commissioned costume and couldn't wait more than 24 hours to find a
replacement.

Anyway, it's heavy enough, steams well, and gets the basic job done, but
it is heavy. The water fill spot has a little cap over it which is nice,
but it is also narrow which makes filling it difficult and I've already
lost the little cup that came with it that you're supposed to use.

The single most annoying feature is the self shut off. It shuts off
after a short time, I am constantly having to turn it back on while I am
sewing. It's easy enough to do that, just pick it up and the motion
turns it back on. Yes, picking up the iron turns it on. Good thing we
don't have kiddies around any more. Also, if it is plugged in and your
power fluctuates, or goes off and comes back on, the iron turns itself
on. Bad, bad bad.

The digital temperature set is not my favorite feature. Theoretically
you can just push the button with your thumb while holding the iron and
it goes up or down. But if you turned it on at 1 and turned it up to 5
and you want to adjust the temp down you have to go through 6, 7, and 6
again, and 5, to get to 4.

And this sucker is heavy. I know heavy can be good, but it's heavy
enough it's almost difficult for me to use. It was heavy before I messed
up my shoulder, and these days it's downright exhausting to use it
sometimes.

It does have an on/off dial and adjustment for the steam, so you can
have any temp setting and steam combo. It's nice to be able to shut
steam off without having to empty the iron.
