With a portable scanner, the print would lay face up on a table and they
would scan it in sections (however wide the portable scanner is) then
reassemble the images digitally. No support needs to be built, just a table
big enough.

After being stored digitally, you could have a life-sized print made by a
copy shop, or you could separate details out and print them individually.
Large copy shops, esp. in college towns, usually have the ability to print
on paper up to 3 feet wide for graphic artists and architects. Often you can
email them the file as well, and have the prints waiting when you get there.
