One of the things I've done is make the main panel wider at the hem and narrower at the shoulders (maybe only in the front panel) for the guys with the gut. I liken it to dealing with a pregnant women's belly. You don't necessarily need a wider back, just room in the front. that keeps the gores on the sides the same size and the flow is better. I took this from looking at the diagrams of existent clothing on Marc Carlson's site.
